Power BI, Microsoft Fabric and business reporting

Reporting that managers trust: governed data models on top of your ERP, dashboards designed around decisions rather than tables, and the data-quality work that makes the numbers hold up in a meeting.

The problem we solve

Plenty of reports, little insight

Most organisations have no shortage of reports. They have an ERP with standard reports nobody uses, a dozen Excel files that each tell a slightly different story, and a Power BI workspace full of dashboards built by enthusiastic individuals who have since left.

The underlying problems are usually the same: no agreed definitions of margin, stock value or on-time delivery; data pulled straight from tables without a model; and no one responsible for keeping reports working when the ERP or the business changes.

  • Management meetings that start with a debate about whose number is correct
  • Reports that break after an ERP update or a change in dimensions
  • Slow dashboards built on direct queries against production tables
  • Row-level security and sharing set up ad hoc, with sensitive data visible to the wrong people
  • Operational teams waiting on finance for figures they need daily

Who this is for

  • Finance directors and controllers who need reliable management reporting across entities
  • Operations, supply chain and sales leaders who want daily operational visibility
  • Organisations on Dynamics 365, SAP Business One or other ERPs that want a governed reporting layer
  • IT managers introducing Microsoft Fabric or consolidating an uncontrolled Power BI estate

What the service covers

We design and build reporting on Power BI and, where it adds value, Microsoft Fabric: semantic models with agreed business definitions, dashboards that answer specific management and operational questions, and data pipelines that bring ERP, CRM and other sources together with appropriate refresh and security.

The work is grounded in the systems we support every day. Business Central, Finance and Supply Chain Management and SAP Business One data structures are familiar to our consultants, which shortens the path from requirement to a correct, performant model. Every deliverable is documented and handed over, and reports can be maintained under a support arrangement so they keep working.

Activities within the service

  • Power BI dashboards and reports for management, finance, sales, supply chain and operations
  • Data modelling, semantic models and reporting improvement (star schemas, measures, calculation groups)
  • Microsoft Fabric and SQL-related analytics where supported by the delivery team: lakehouse, dataflows, pipelines, warehouses
  • Management reporting packs and operational visibility (daily and intraday refresh)
  • Data-quality assessment, governance, workspace and security set-up, report optimisation
  • User enablement: training, documentation and report standards
  • Reporting from Dynamics 365, SAP Business One, SQL Server, Dataverse, Excel and SharePoint sources

Platforms covered

  • Power BI Desktop and Service
  • Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Dataflows Gen2, Pipelines)
  • SQL Server and Azure SQL
  • Dataverse
  • Excel and SharePoint sources
  • Business Central and F&SCM APIs

Common use cases

Group management pack across entities

Revenue, margin, working capital and cash positions consolidated from several Business Central companies into one governed model with agreed definitions and currency handling.

Logistics and supply chain visibility

On-time-in-full, stock cover, backorders, carrier performance and warehouse throughput refreshed through the day for operations managers.

Sales and margin analysis for wholesale

Customer, product and channel margin with price-list and discount effects made visible, so commercial decisions are based on actual contribution.

Manufacturing performance

Production output, scrap, downtime reasons and planned-versus-actual costs from F&SCM or Business Central manufacturing, aligned with shop-floor realities.

Rescuing an uncontrolled Power BI estate

An inventory of existing reports, consolidation into shared semantic models, workspace and row-level security governance, and retirement of duplicates.

Fabric lakehouse for mixed sources

ERP, CRM and external data landed in a lakehouse with dataflows and pipelines, feeding standard Power BI models and ad hoc SQL analysis.

Practical deliverables

  • Reporting requirements and definitions document (KPI dictionary)
  • Governed semantic model(s) with documented measures and refresh schedule
  • Dashboards and reports designed to a consistent standard, tested with business users
  • Workspace, security and row-level security configuration
  • Data-quality findings and fixes at the source where possible
  • User guides, training session and handover to your report owners

What you can expect

  • One version of the numbers with definitions the business has agreed
  • Reports that load quickly and refresh reliably
  • Operational teams with daily visibility instead of month-end surprises
  • A reporting estate that someone owns and maintains

How an engagement runs

  1. Requirement workshop

Which decisions need which numbers, who uses them, how often, and what the definitions are. We leave with a KPI dictionary draft.

  2. Data assessment

Sources, quality, volumes, refresh needs and security constraints are assessed; the architecture (Power BI alone or with Fabric) is proposed.

  3. Model and build

The semantic model is built first and validated against known figures; reports follow in short review cycles with your users.

  4. Validate and roll out

Reconciliation to ERP totals, performance tuning, security testing, training and publication.

  5. Maintain

Reports and models maintained under support so they survive ERP updates and business change.

Scope and delivery boundaries

  • Reporting is only as good as the source data; data-quality issues are reported and, where agreed, fixed at the source rather than hidden in the model
  • Fabric, SQL and data-engineering work is offered where the delivery team has confirmed capability; we will tell you if a requirement falls outside it
  • Licensing (Power BI Pro, Premium per user, Fabric capacity) is advised on but purchased by you or through us as an authorised reseller
  • We design reports around specific decisions; a request for "a dashboard of everything" gets turned into prioritised questions first

Frequently asked questions

Can you connect Power BI to Business Central or F&SCM without slowing the system down?

Yes. We use the supported APIs, data exports or entity stores rather than heavy direct queries against production, and we schedule refreshes appropriately. For high-volume or intraday needs we propose a Fabric or SQL staging layer.

We already have Power BI reports. Can you improve rather than rebuild them?

Usually. We start with an inventory and a review of the models behind the reports. Where the model is sound we improve it; where several reports duplicate logic we consolidate into a shared semantic model.

Do we need Microsoft Fabric?

Not necessarily. Many organisations are well served by Power BI with well-designed models. Fabric becomes useful when you combine many sources, need a lakehouse or warehouse, or want data engineering and analytics in one governed platform. We recommend it only where the need is real.

Who owns the reports afterwards?

You do. Models, reports and documentation are delivered into your tenant and workspaces, with a named report owner on your side trained to maintain them. Ongoing maintenance is available under a support arrangement if you prefer.

Can you report on SAP Business One data?

Yes. SAP Business One on SQL or HANA is a common source for Power BI models, and our SAP consultants understand the table structures and business logic needed for correct sales, stock and financial reporting.

Discuss a Power BI or reporting requirement

Describe the decisions you need better numbers for and the systems the data lives in. We will propose an approach, an architecture and a scoped first phase.
